Humble Beginnings
Established in 1932 by Vince Rack, J & V Rack Co started as an all family operation. Utilizing a slip scraper, plow and a team of mules, Vince, in partnership with his father (Joseph J.) and brothers (Jerry & Joe A.) as hired hands, dug basements and foundations in the Monfort Heights community. This family business would soon be without its owner as Vince enlisted as a Combat Engineer in the United States Army at the brink of World War II.
A New Start
In 1946 upon returning home from the war, Vince utilized his veteran status to begin buying surplus army excavation equipment. Using his army corps experience, he expanded the excavation business to include home building and later on, commercial properties. After building the first ever shopping center in Monfort Heights, Vince continued his building success with the help of his seven children into apartment complexes and subdivisions.
The Next Generation
For the next 20 years the company operated as a three-generation company while Joseph J, Vince, and his sons (while not in school) continued excavation and home building on the West Side of Cincinnati. In 1964 Vince's two oldest sons (Vince Jr. & Gary) began to assume a management role. In 1975 Joseph J. Rack passed and in the early 1980's the official name changed to V & G Rack.
By the late 1980's, all (7) of Vince's children: Mary, Dale, Jim, John, Nina and her husband John Specht, joined and continued their full time careers with V & G Rack. By 1990 all were partial owners of the company.
In 2005, the company was officially changed to J & D Rack Co., Inc. and again became a three-generation operating company as many of the grandsons joined the family business. Vince and his sons co-operated J & D Rack until 2013 when Vince went to his final resting place.
